XXL Team 3 - New Thialf: Iceberg - (Pre)Final Presentation

The project has attracted the attention of the jury for the visionary concept the team has developed for a New Thialf. Fluidity of spaces and continuity of curved surfaces lead the architectural design (by Xi Guo). A rational system based on three typologies of parts has been developed for the structural system (by Feng Liu). For the design of the envelope (by Morris Yang) and the climate design (by Ioannis Gkikas), large attention has been invested on energy efficiency and production. Budget limitations were not a priority among the design criteria the team has focused on - this became immediately evident to the jury. Across all these aspects, the computational models (by Rafail Gkaidatzis) have allowed controlling and rationalizing the complex geometries, and exploring design alternatives in relation to performance criteria. Besides congratulating for the visionary approach, the jury advised for a number of additional improvements to be developed before the submission of the final reports - especially regarding architectural coherency between the fluid envelope and the inner partitions; additional calculations for the structural system; the thermal insulation of the skating area; the simplification of the roof's walkable areas. Last efforts before the final exams.
